BACKGROUND: The absence of a formal training in minimally Invasive cardiac surgery in Brazil contributes to the delay of research and development of this subspecialty. Experienced cardiac surgeons, how could easily absorb the new techniques, can not abandon their current position to course a 1 or 2 years of full-time fellowship.
METHODS: During the course of 12 months, 15 surgeons from different cardiac surgery centers in Brazil had monthly 3-day meetings where they could be exposed to lectures, simulation tough situations and bail out strategies, discussions about the specifics of the techniques and live surgeries to observe the details on performing each procedure. The program covered the minimally invasive treatment of septal defects, valvular pathologies, coronary artery disease using off-pump strategies, combined surgery, and also minimally invasive cardiopulmonary bypass.
RESULTS: After 2 years, all the 15 trained (100%) surgeons are performing regularly minimally invasive cardiac procedures. The transition from the training to a full practice was supported by proctoring and guidance from the instructors at the surgeon's location.
CONCLUSIONS: The performance all the trained surgeons on this course supports the role of this type of training to experienced surgeons and also the possibility of teaching minimally invasive techniques on specific programs different from full-time fellowships.
