BACKGROUND: Cardiac tumors are rare, with 0.02% - 0.2% incidence range. Minimally invasive approach had been introduced in the surgical field for cardiac tumors resection. This study summarizes nine patients’ outcomes of cardiac tumors resected by minimally invasive approach.
METHODS: This is a retrospective descriptive study. Between April 2018 to December 2020, nine patients diagnosed with cardiac tumors underwent minimally invasive surgical resection through right mini-thoracotomy at King Faisal Specialist hospital and research center, Jeddah. RESULTS: Myxoma was the commonest pathology representing 55.6% followed by thrombus (22.2%), Leimyoma (11.1%), and Angiosarcoma (11.1%). All tumors were resected with negative margins. One patient was converted to open sternotomy. Tumors’ locations were in right atrium, left atrium, and left ventricle in 5,3, and 1 patients respectively. Median length of stay in ICU was 1.33 days. Median length of stay in hospital was 8.55 days. There was no mortality.
CONCLUSIONS: Minimally invasive cardiac procedure could be utilized safely to resect cardiac tumors with negative margins irrespective of their location inside the heart.
