Robotic Excision Of Mediastinal Ectopic Thyroid Mass
Ray Chihara, MD PhD, Manu Sancheti, MD.
Emory University, Atlanta, GA, USA.
OBJECTIVE: Demonstrate the use of robotics and minimally invasive techniques in performing complex mediastinal mass excision.
METHODS: Video case presentation of a mediastinal ectopic thyroid mass in the middle mediastinum is shown.
RESULTS: Successful resection of a mediastinal ectopic thyroid mass measuring 3.3 x 4.6 x 5.5cm was completed using minimally invasive techniques. The patient was discharged on post-operative day 2. Pathology revealed benign thyroid tissue with hyperplasia.
CONCLUSIONS: Resection of mediastinal masses near vital structures is feasible using robotics and minimally invasive techniques. Further research is warranted to compare outcomes between open and minimally invasive operations for mediastinal masses.
