Clinicopathological analysis of primary lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the pulmonary
Cheng Shen, Guowei Che.
West China Hospital, Chengdu, China.

OBJECTIVE: Lymphoepithelial carcinoma is a nasopharyngeal carcinoma with lymphoid stroma and non-keratinizing squamous cells. LELCs arise outside the nasopharynx but resemble a lymphoepithelial histologically. Pulmonary LELC is a rare malignant tumor. We aimed to investigate clinicopathological features of eight pulmonary LELCs cases.
METHODS: There were eight LELCs patients who underwent surgical treatment between 2008 and 2013 at the Thoracic Surgical Department of West China Hospital, Sichuan, China. We analyzed the clinical data, radiological manifestation, treatment strategy, pathological findings, and prognosis of all patients retrospectively.
RESULTS: There were eight LELCs patients who underwent surgical treatment between 2008 and 2013 at the Thoracic Surgical Department of West China Hospital, Sichuan, China. We analyzed the clinical data, radiological manifestation, treatment strategy, pathological findings, and prognosis of all patients retrospectively.
CONCLUSIONS: The correct diagnosis were based on cytopathology, histopathologic, immunohistochemical results, and detailed systemic examination to exclude possible extra-pulmonary (nasopharyngeal) origin and other type of lung diseases. To early-stage pulmonary LELCs, the mainstay of treatment is surgical resection, while multimodality treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy) should be adopted in patients with advanced or unresectable diseases.
