Resection of Benign Rib Tumor with Preservation of Overlying Periosteum by Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery

OBJECTIVE: To present method of rib tumor resection by video assisted thoracoscopic surgery and review its literature
METHODS: Resection of rib tumors usually requires an extended incision, including size of the mass and 2cm margins at both ends. Rib tumors can be successfully removed by video assisted thoracoscopic surgery and at the same time periosteal preservation can also be done. Cutting of the bone can be facilitated by bone punch and its removal can be done through a 1 to 2cm port
RESULTS: Resection via video assisted thoracoscopic surgery allows for superior cosmesis, muscle sparing, decreased pain and morbidity plus all the advantages of an open procedure
CONCLUSIONS: Resection of benign bone tumors can be done with video assisted thoracoscopic surgery using readily available instruments, excellent cosmesis, and patient satisfaction
